CHALLENGE
Literacy is critical to a child’s academic success, particularly early-grade reading. Reading at grade level is one of the strongest predictors of later success in school. The summer slide is a decline in reading ability and other academic skills that can occur over the summer months when school isn't in session.
SOLUTION
RISE forged a community/school partnership with United Way to provide summer learning events that provide access to free meals, books, STEM, and enrichment activities.
RESULTS
In the first two years of the Book and a Bite pilot, we have given away over 5,000 books, served over 6,000 meals and delivered over 7,000 hands-on STEM activities. In 2017, 78% of students in Kuna held or increased their reading scores.
