One of the funniest things to us here at United Way of Treasure Valley are some of the men that are involved in our organization. We have this amazing team of big, strong, burly men who are constantly helping us with the labor part of this work; whether it's hauling boxes, moving furniture, unboxing pallets, etc. But in spite of some of these guys' big, strong exteriors, they are the nicest bunch of big-hearted softies we have ever met. Mark Zaleski is no exception. Because of Mark and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, UWTV has been gifted thousands of dollars to support numerous projects that go to help children and families in need. We are so excited to welcome Mark to the Campaign Cabinet!Talk to us about being on the Campaign Cabinet. What motivated you to want to get involved?
Being involved in a labor union, our members are often looking for ways to give back to the communities we live in. I was aware of United Way but knew very little of the work that they did. After a little research I reached out to their office and set up a meeting as this looked like a good fit for our members. We discussed volunteer opportunities and how we could be involved and now after a few book bashes and a holiday event, we have found a new partner. I was truly honored when I was asked to be a part of the Campaign Cabinet and I am looking forward to being involved and doing the work along-side all the other like-minded individuals.
There are so many ways to give back and be involved with charitable organizations. Why do you choose United Way?
Clearly my decision to choose United Way was the work they do to assist so many of those in need. Whether its assisting the "working poor" under the ALICE banner, or meeting the needs of the thousands of homeless school aged children, their work is needed and doesn't get done by itself.
Tell us a little about your role with your organization and what you do!
I am an Electrician by trade and am currently the Business Manager of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 291 based here in Boise. We represent over 1,200 workers including Electricians, Lineman, Communication Workers, Maintenance Workers, and Office staff. My work includes making sure these workers have livable wages, health insurance, and retirement plans.
What are you doing when you’re not working your tail off at your place of employment or for United Way?
My passions include being on a bicycle or wearing a pair of ice skates. To me, being on two wheels or gliding across a frozen sheet of ice is a freedom that can't be matched.
