Today we want to introduce you to the Perez family. David and his wife, Theresa have had a couple of very difficult years. But thanks to several programs and services which United Way of Treasure Valley helps to support and connect, they are currently getting back on their feet.
A couple of years ago, David became very sick and was hospitalized. He wasn’t able to work and spent all their savings on medical bills. Theresa’s job helped with food, but it wasn’t enough to keep up on rent. The Perez family ended up losing their home. David never imagined his family would ever be without a home. Just the word ‘homeless’ was beyond his understanding. David was beginning to learn just how hard life can be, even when you're doing the best you can.
The Perez Family is doing much better now, thanks in large part to the role United Way of Treasure Valley plays in our community. United Way of Treasure Valley works with and helps to connect helpful and innovative programs. In David's case, they were connected to a rental assistance program that helped them get back into housing. Then they were connected to a job training program that’s helping Theresa get the skills she needs to advance her pay at her work. David was able to find a job and become trained so now he can work, even with his medical issues. And their kids are connected to out of school programs supported by United Way of Treasure Valley that are fun for them and helps Theresa and David work without worry for their kids after school.
David and Theresa know they could never have done this alone. It took a community of care and help, and they’ve learned that United Way of Treasure Valley was the common connector all along the way. Their family is working hard so that they can join the community and help others in their time of need.
